A Safer Storage Routine for Pet-Care and Cleaning Products

Product names and front-of-package claims are only a starting point. Before buying or using a pet-care item, check the full label and confirm that the instructions match your animal and the job you have in mind.
Look for the details that guide safe use
- Intended use: What is the product designed for, and where is it meant to be used?
- Species and life stage: Does the label identify the animals, age, or size it is intended for?
- Directions: How should it be used, how often, and are there limits or steps to follow?
- Ingredients or materials: Is the full information available, and are there ingredients you need to discuss with a veterinarian?
- Warnings and storage: Are there precautions, first-aid steps, or storage instructions?
- Manufacturer details: Can you identify who made or distributed the item and how to contact them?
Read claims in context
Words such as “gentle,” “natural,” or “daily” do not tell you whether an item fits your pet. In the United States, FDA explains that claims on animal-food labels can affect how a product is regulated, and that questions about a product’s specific use should be directed to a veterinarian. Rules can differ by product type, so do not assume every pet-care item follows the same labeling system.
Pause when the label is unclear
Do not use a product on a different species or for a different purpose than the label states. If directions are missing, a claim sounds medical, or you are unsure whether the product is appropriate, contact the manufacturer or ask your veterinarian before use.
