How to Read Pet-Care Product Labels Before You Buy
October 15, 2026
A simple storage routine can help prevent pets from chewing, spilling, or accidentally swallowing products around the home. Follow the instructions on each package because storage and disposal requirements differ by product.
Keep the original label with the product
- Store items in their original, closed packaging when possible so directions and warnings stay available.
- Keep medications, grooming items, and household cleaners in separate, clearly identified places.
- Return each product to storage immediately after use, and do not leave open containers near a curious pet.
- Follow the package’s temperature, light, and moisture instructions.
Choose a secure storage spot
Use a closed cabinet or another location your pet cannot reach or open. Remember that cats can climb and dogs may chew through bags or containers. Keep products away from food and water bowls, and do not transfer liquids or powders to unmarked containers.
Check before discarding or reusing
Follow the label for disposal and never reuse a product container for food or water. If a package is damaged, leaking, or missing its directions, contact the manufacturer for guidance rather than guessing.
If your pet gets into a product
Keep the package and contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly, especially if your pet appears unwell. For animal medications, FDA advises keeping them in their original labeled containers and out of pets’ reach.
