Bringing Home a New Pet: A First-Week Setup Checklist
October 14, 2026
Indoor enrichment does not need to be elaborate. Short activities that let a pet sniff, explore, chase, or solve a simple problem can add variety to an ordinary day. Follow your pet’s interest and keep sessions comfortable.
Try a short activity
- Let dogs sniff: hide a few pieces of their regular food in an easy-to-find spot and invite them to search.
- Play with cats: move a wand toy in short, varied motions and let your cat catch it; put string-style toys away after play.
- Rotate familiar toys: bring out a small selection, then switch them later so the same items are not always available.
- Practice a simple cue: use a brief reward-based training session, ending while your pet is still engaged.
Keep play safe and low pressure
Choose toys that are suitable for your pet’s size and play style. Supervise toys that have loose parts, strings, or pieces that could be chewed off, and remove anything damaged. Give your pet the choice to join in or take a break.
Fit enrichment to your pet
Some pets enjoy movement; others prefer sniffing, watching, or exploring a new texture. Try one simple activity at a time and notice what your pet returns to. If a game causes frustration or overexcitement, make it easier or end the session.
Our training and behavior collection has items for everyday interaction. Check the product details and supervise play as appropriate.
